While meandering around t’interweb this afternoon I found a site called 25 Things I Have Learnt. It’s basically about the experiences of an amateur photographer using Flickr who wants to share the lessons that he has learnt.
It’s not like he mentions anything new about street photography. All of the maxims are there; get to know your equipment, always have your camera on you, and shoot first then think later. What does make it interesting, I thought, was the fact that he’d developed all this through the online photo community at Flickr. Before reading this I had convinced myself that buying a negative scanner was an unnecessary expense because I don’t have the computing power to launch into a digital darkroom but now I think that it just means I don’t need a top of the range neg scanner. I want to shoot in black and white film for at least the time being because I like the potential of the medium but there is no harm in sharing all of my negatives with the world at large and using online communities to help me pick which shots are worth moving on with and taking back to the darkroom for printing. Also, I’d like to be able to make digital contact sheets and also scan in my final prints for an online portfolio.
So, rather than just share a link I’ve launched into a waffle about what kind of digital photographic equipment I’d like. It’s to be expected, really. I regularly suffer from bouts of technology lust. But deep down I know that before I get all excited I need to get myself into the dark room and develop all the rolls of film I have lying around.
