Geoblogging

August 7, 2005

Geoblogging is, quite simply, what happens when you combine a Flickr image with geographical tags and Google Maps. The end result is a Google map with all of your photographs pinned down to the location where they were taken. A very clever little gimmick, I have to say.

For more information check out these great posts at Tempus Fugit and Excellatronic. As well as information on how to actually add geotags there is also a bookmarklet which will let you see any geotagged images for the area of Google maps that you are browsing.

Sadly all of this is written for Firefox which is a great browser but not my default. I\’m a Safari man. I guess because all of this is new support for everyone is going to be a bit sketchy but as it comes on I expect we\’ll see plenty of native OS X apps to make geotagging a reality.

25 Things I Have Learnt

August 6, 2005

While meandering around t’interweb this afternoon I found a site called 25 Things I Have Learnt. It’s basically about the experiences of an amateur photographer using Flickr who wants to share the lessons that he has learnt.

It’s not like he mentions anything new about street photography. All of the maxims are there; get to know your equipment, always have your camera on you, and shoot first then think later. What does make it interesting, I thought, was the fact that he’d developed all this through the online photo community at Flickr. Before reading this I had convinced myself that buying a negative scanner was an unnecessary expense because I don’t have the computing power to launch into a digital darkroom but now I think that it just means I don’t need a top of the range neg scanner. I want to shoot in black and white film for at least the time being because I like the potential of the medium but there is no harm in sharing all of my negatives with the world at large and using online communities to help me pick which shots are worth moving on with and taking back to the darkroom for printing. Also, I’d like to be able to make digital contact sheets and also scan in my final prints for an online portfolio.

So, rather than just share a link I’ve launched into a waffle about what kind of digital photographic equipment I’d like. It’s to be expected, really. I regularly suffer from bouts of technology lust. But deep down I know that before I get all excited I need to get myself into the dark room and develop all the rolls of film I have lying around.

Flickr and XML-RPC Problems

Well, I’ve discovered why my XML-RPC posts are going crazy. It’s got nothing to do with the Dashboard widget that I’m using but is a general problem at Blogsome. I’ve just started playing around with Flickr as a way of sharing pictures taken with my new Sony Ericsson T630 mobile phone and posts from Flickr have the same problem. Having looked around the Blogsome fora it seems that this is a general problem that people are having and is quite a considerable hole in their service. I hope that the Blogsome people get onto the problem soon so that I can get the most use out of their service.

Get The Most Out of Your Tiger

August 4, 2005

David Pogue, author of the Missing Manual series, has just released his book on Tiger. So what? Well, other than the fact that it is probably full of lots of useful tips to help you keep your computer firing at full speed, the good news is that O’Reilly have latched onto this podcasting malarky and are releasing a podcast with excerpts of the book. So far they have featured Spotlight and Dashboard and as a result I’m getting so much more functionality out of both programmes.

To Podcast or Not To Podcast

I have just read a post at The Tao of Mac explaining why the podsphere is not all it’s cracked up to be and has made me think that maybe I shouldn’t podcast after all.

It’s a valid point. There is so much bandwidth wastage out there and while Adam Curry is right to say that it is a powerful new medium and things like the Podsafe Music Network are bringing large numbers of unsigned bands to the world’s attention, I still think that podcasting is best done by people with a true passion for what they’re talking about rather than a passing interest like me.

For an example of a great podcast check out No Idle Frets, an awesome podcast sharing jazz guitar with the world. Much better than the prevailing wealth of podcast geekery.

Dashboard Widget for Wordpress

August 3, 2005

Whilst ambling around the interweb I found the wonderful little WordPressDash. It’s a nice simple widget that sits on your Dashboard waiting for the need to make a post to strike you. It makes posts like this one amazingly simple.

After making this post I have discovered that it has the annoying habit of escaping all quotations making apostrophes and hyperlinks break. Somewhat less than ideal but I will try and find a way around it to make it more useful. Either that or have a bit of a hack into the source code to make it work properly.

Update: I think the best way to get around the escaping problems is to use the MarkDown syntax in my posts.

My New Home On The Web

August 2, 2005

Welcome to my new corner of the interweb. It’s not much to look at right now, but then that’s not really suprising seeing as I’ve only just moved in. Hopefully once I’ve had a bit of time to get used to the place and bring in some of my belongings things will start to perk up.

Things you can expect to see here are:

  • Information about my eBay Dashboard widget for OS X Tiger
  • Photography tips, tricks, recommendations and comments
  • My very own podcast, which I’m starting to work on already

So, although it’s kind of bleak at the moment I intend to make full use of the space here at Blogsome and see what I can achieve.
